The real story is about cost. DeepSeek has led the way to near-zero inference costs, which Western frontier models will copy. This is excellent news for open source advocates and product people.
This will accelerate the shift from thinking about AI as purely efficiency gains to revenue generation, opening the door to more innovative product releases.
Savvy media and publishing executives should 10X their product and innovation efforts and use AI to build new offerings for loyal subscribers. What may have been aspirational, too ambitious, and out of reach last week is now in play.
This week’s news means innovative media AI strategists move from defence to offence.
