The written-by-a-human bit

An ex-colleague and friend, Dion, introduced me last week to There’s An AI For That, a new version of Product Hunt that acts as a search engine for over 28,000 AI tools. This is heaven for us nerds and innovators, but I thought I would share the top seven tools I use daily.

Meeting note-takers such as Fathom, Read, Fireflies, and Otter are missing from my list. We have turned off the default for external client calls because they felt uninvited, intrusive, and stifled conversations. However, I keep Granola AI on my desktop for ad-hoc note-taking.

I pay for ChatGPT o1 because you get advanced reasoning, but 4o is plenty for day-to-day summaries. My primary use cases are writing draft proposals for Mathison, researching business strategies, or summarising academic papers. If you haven’t tried out the (paid) voice chat yet, it is ridiculously fast. Look out for ChatGPT advanced voice mode with Vision coming very shortly. My colleagues are moving towards Claude 3.5 Sonnet, but I refuse to pay another monthly subscription.

As mentioned last week, Perplexity is my go-to “answer engine” for anything other than shopping and directions. They have nailed the UI and are improving their attribution. However, I hope their new ad revenue model doesn’t crush the user experience.

Canva’s premium paid tier now has some funky AI plugins, such as removing backgrounds from images, but Gamma App is now my default for presentations. It is intuitive, responsive, and very fast. However, don’t fall into the trap of overreliance, as you may stand up to give a presentation and not recognise your slides.

ElevenLabs and HeyGen are the market leaders in audio and video avatar generation, but I stumbled on Creatify AI last week, which seems to do both very well. You will hit a paywall pretty fast, but I enjoyed creating this Instagram-ready ad for our Bristol Hana newsletter.

Needless to say, I am using Grammarly AI right now, which just gets smarter and smarter.

Finally, a shout-out to our own report generator, Hana News. I use it to share article summaries with colleagues and clients and for this newsletter. It’s an excellent tool for impressing prospects with recent articles about their specific industry vertical.

Please let me know what I have missed, and we will update this list twice a year.
