“Block the bots or feed them facts?” seems to be the prevailing dilemma in most newsrooms today, and Technical.ly is wrestling with it as we report today. They make the obvious but clear distinction:
“The tech affects the news industry from two directions: the inside — how AI tools are used to make the news — and the outside: how news products get used by AI companies building their tools.”
Their approach seems eminently sensible - adopt the tools with human oversight and unblock the bots to allow the AI crawlers in (and allow their tools to work).
This approach works for technical.ly, which doesn’t have a paywall. However, the value exchange still doesn’t work for gated subscription content, as seen by the latest spat between Dow Jones and Perplexity.
Perplexity’s response last week was a peace offering of sorts but dangerously naive.
“They (media companies) prefer to live in a world where publicly reported facts are owned by corporations, and no one can do anything with those publicly reported facts without paying a toll. That is not our view of the world.”
Not all facts are created equal. Facts about recipe suggestions and travel itineraries differ significantly from facts about market-sensitive scoops, breaking news from Ukraine or investigative reporting.
Perplexity’s ad revenue share model will not placate the circling sharks. As mentioned before, the real value exchange will be by sharing snippets that drive new subscribers to a paywall. It's not the optimum user experience, but not all facts are free.
