The gloves finally came off yesterday, as my former employer, Dow Jones and The New York Post, sued Perplexity, the self-styled generative AI “answer engine,” as reported in The Wall Street Journal. The News Corp subsidiaries argue that Perplexity is freeriding on their copyrighted content by using it to answer users’ questions without attribution.
Unlike Google search results pages, where clear links and signposts send traffic back to the source, Perplexity is accused of encouraging users to “skip the links” and stay engaged with their product.
Perplexity has made a big mistake—instead of advertising eggs for sale, they have taken the eggs, made scrambled eggs, and then tried to sell them as their own.
This smacks of classic West Coast tech imperialism, which lacks understanding or empathy for the provenance, cost, and value of news creation. If AI platforms play fast and loose with content creators’ business models, nothing will be left for them to ingest except AI slop.
