News websites’ search boxes have always been a horrible experience, with many users reverting to Google to find a specific article on a particular domain. Simultaneously, AI search will crush search traffic as summaries on Google Overviews or Perplexity serve up too much information with too little attribution.
One obvious solution to both problems is to replace on-site search boxes with an in-house AI-powered search. This would generate a novel content-rich landing page with full citations to own brand content.
As first reported by Semaphore, Politico is rolling this service out to its Pro users.
“The move is the latest partnership between a news publisher and an AI company, but it’s unusual in one key way: The idea is to create a product specifically for Politico and increase its relevance for current Politico Pro subscribers rather than license Politico’s content to assist or train an external AI model. The tool will be hosted inside the Politico Pro dashboard”
