The written-by-a-human bit:

We continue to monitor Perplexity’s strategy as it seeks to appease publishers with an ad-share model. I doubt the numbers will excite publishers, while ads on Perplexity could degrade the user experience. A smarter approach could be to present ungated paywalled content to drive high-value subscriptions. We are far from a fair value exchange when self-styled AI “answer engines” are destinations, not signposts.

In media land, there has been a tangible shift from scepticism to adoption of AI tools, with many time-saving applications seeping into newsrooms. However, this is more often than not a case of BYO-AI or Bring Your Own AI to work, rather than co-ordinated top-down enterprise-wide policies. Leadership needs to set a culture where AI is no longer seen as cheating and colleagues can freely share time-saving tools and techniques. McKinsey reported on how to reshape your software talent strategy last week, citing IBM Software, where developers using Gen AI saw a 30% to 40% lift in productivity.

Meanwhile, AI news had a quiet week, barring disputes over California's SB 1047, the “kill switch bill.” We believe the bill has overreached for the long-term existential risk but dodges hard questions about short-term risks such as bias and deepfakes. We still believe that AI is fundamentally ungovernable, and well-meant legislation is unenforceable. So, time would be better spent planning for mitigating harms rather than the prevention of harms.

Perplexity AI has introduced a Publishers’ Program, a revenue-sharing model designed to bridge the gap between AI applications and copyrighted content from publishers. This initiative comes amid tensions between AI companies and media organizations over content misappropriation, as many publishers fear losing traffic and revenue. The program promises publishers a "meaningful percentage" of ad revenues generated from AI-generated content, though concerns linger about potential conflicts with journalistic integrity. As the media landscape evolves, this collaboration might offer much-needed support for financially strained newsrooms, providing new revenue streams while fostering innovative partnerships in AI journalism. 🤖
